Suppressors, SBRs & the NFA Process

The $200 tax stamp is gone
As of January 1, 2026, the federal tax stamp for suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and AOWs is $0. It was $200 for over 90 years.
To be clear about what didn’t change: you still file the ATF form, still pass a background check, still submit fingerprints and photos, and still wait for approval before you can take possession. The paperwork is the same. The tax is simply gone.
(Machine guns and destructive devices are not covered by this change and still carry the $200 tax.)
What we handle
- Form 4 — Transfers. Buying a suppressor, SBR, SBS, or AOW. This is the most common path. The item sits in our inventory until your approval comes back.
- Form 1 — Making an SBR or SBS. Converting a rifle you already own into a short-barreled rifle. You file the Form 1 yourself as the maker; we’ll walk you through the eForms submission, do your prints and photos, and handle the required engraving.
- Form 3 — Dealer to dealer. Moving an NFA item between licensed dealers, including sourcing an item we don’t stock. Form 3s are tax-free and typically move faster than Form 4s.
Individual or trust?
Both work, and each has tradeoffs:
- Individual — simplest. One person, one set of prints and photos. Only you can possess the item.
- Trust — lets multiple people (a spouse, adult children, co-trustees) legally possess the item, and simplifies what happens to it after you pass. Every responsible person on the trust submits prints and photos.

The process, step by step
- Pick your item. In the shop, or call us and we’ll source it. If we don’t stock it, a Form 3 brings it in.
- Pay. 50% at the time of your order, with the balance due at pickup after your transfer is approved. The item goes into our inventory under your name and can’t be sold to anyone else.
- Paperwork, prints, and photos — all on site. Bring valid photo ID and plan on about 40 minutes. If you’re using a trust, bring your trust documents and every responsible person needs to come in.
- We submit electronically. ATF eForms.
- You wait. Check the ATF’s current processing times for the latest estimate. This fluctuates — the tax change has driven a significant increase in submissions, so expect times to move. We’ll update you if anything changes on your application.
- Approval, then pickup. We’ll call you as soon as your stamp comes through. You’ll complete a Form 4473 at pickup, same as any firearm.
Important: the item stays with us
Federal law requires that your NFA item remain in our possession until your transfer is approved. This isn’t a policy choice — no dealer can hand it over early, and you should be skeptical of any that offers to.
